Dr. Israel Irving Ziderman was born in London, England in 1936. As a young man he studied Jewish Studies at Jews’ College and learned Gemara with Rabbi Ben-Zion Lopian, of blessed memory. During 1956-1959 Dr. Ziderman served as the Secretary-General of Bnei Akiva in Great Britain and Ireland. He immigrated to Israel as a pioneer in 1959, settling on Kibbutz Shluchot in the Beit She’an valley. Since 1961 Dr. Ziderman has been living in Jerusalem.

Dr. Ziderman received his B.Sc. degree in animal physiology from London University, and M.Sc. (cum laude) and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

From 1966 to 1991 Dr. Ziderman served as a senior scientist at the Israel Fiber Institute in Jerusalem, and was promoted to the grade of Associate Professor. He researched the industrial chemistry of cellulose, starch, cotton ad sugars, and specialized in clarifying the chemical mechanisms of the decomposition of these carbohydrates in alkali and also the chemical reaction of proteins and carbohydrates that cause the formation of carcinogenic foods. Dr. Ziderman lectured at the Hebrew University on the chemistry of dyes.

In 1970 he established the Association of Research Scientists in Israel, the professional organization of scientists in governmental research institutions. Since then he has served as the chairman of the organization.

Dr. Ziderman served in the IDF as a machine-gunner, with the rank of sergeant, and was awarded campaign ribbons for the Six Day War, the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, the Peace for Galilee War and the Ribbon of Combat Service. He was also awarded a state badge of appreciation for his service in the Israel Police’s Civil Guard.

Since 1989, Dr. Ziderman has held the position of scientific editor of Yalkut, the Israeli Journal for Textile and Fashion.
